Languages through Lenses 2011
15 Projects were nominated for the 2011 competition.
Art school students make 90-second short films to show all facets of multilingualism in Europe.
The European Union has a strategy on multilingualism with a focus on cultural diversity, based on the motto ‘United in Diversity’.
Through this competition we invite students to give a contribution on the benefits of language learning, the value of speaking several languages and the richness of intercultural exchanges, using the language of the arts.
The competition was for new audiovisual productions that are innovative, witty, creative, unexpected, motivating and that explore the potential of multilingualism and the challenges it creates.
A workshop with all selected students took place in the ELIA Offices Amsterdam. In three days of productive and stimulating discussion, all projects were discussed and received feedback.
The workshop was led by three experts in the field of scriptwriting and short film production:
- Syl van Duyn, Writer and buyer for documentaries for the Dutch public television
- Pál Sipos, Producer and Head of Cultural Programs in the Hungarian Television until 2010
- Pekka Ruohoranta, Producer and director in YLE Drama
Now, at PRIX EUROPA 2011, a tough programme is scheduled for the Languages though Lenses participants.
On Tuesday, 25 October, the participants will jointly view and discuss all the submissions.
On Wednesday, 26 October, the students are guests at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam.
The Insitute was founded to promote a special innovation culture, the School of Design Thinking at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI D-School) has been offering the first academic advanced training in Design Thinking within Europe since October 2007. It is the biggest academic institution that offers this education programme according to its sister institution, the “Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford” (d.school) at the Stanford University in California.
Design Thinking is a user-centric innovation approach for developing products, services and concepts for any field and originally pioneered from the Silicon Valley. The revolutionary concept of the Design Thinking approach is to group students in small multi-disciplinary teams of five to six so they can develop better solutions in small teams than individual experts or single-discipline teams ever could.
On Wednesday evening the Top Three in the Languages though Lenses category will be announced at the Dutch Embassy.
All, in all - an inspiring few days for the students.
Please take a look at all the programmes yourself - and see funny, creative insights about multilingualism. We have them all here.
