PRIX EUROPA at the Embassies

25 years of PRIX EUROPA stands for 25 years of European joi de vivre – this will be celebrated during the entire festival week at various embassies and cultural institutions in Berlin, organised along with our partner organisations.

A trip around Europe on the German capital’s soil with screenings, presentations, panels, discussions, speeches – and foods and beverages as diverse as our continent.

Our trip starts on Sunday, 23 October in the south of Europe: at the Instituto Cervantes Berlin, the Spanish Institute for Culture. Under the motto “Europe in Front of the Windmills – From Cervantes to the Indignados”, the very first TV Fiction winner of the festival history will be re-screened: “Las Gallinas de Cervantes” by Spanish Television (TVE). But we will not be stuck in the past – as the title of the evening suggests, the Indignados movement of today’s Spain and their specific fight against another kind of windmills will be a topic as well.

On Monday, 24 October our virtual travel through Europe will see us move from Spain to France. One of this year’s festival entries from that country, “Les Mauvais Jours” with Ariane Ascaride, will be screened at the French Embassy at Pariser Platz. In a well-crafted story the fiction film depicts the fears of the Bourgeois society: a 50-year old tries to stop her social decline by hiding her unemployment to her circle of friends.

The Netherlands are our next destination: On Wednesday, 26 October the Ambassade van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden will host the festival week’s halftime event. Paul Römer, co-creators of the format “Big Brother” and now Managing Director of NTR, the Dutch public broadcasting company, will hold a keynote speech.
Later on the Top 3 of Languages through Lenses will be announced. This category for student’s video projects enjoys the patronage of the European Commission and is cooperated with ELIA. And as ELIA’S Headquarter is based in Amsterdam, their executive Director Carla Delfoss will be on native soil this evening.

From Holland to Hungary. On Thursday, 27 October, the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin will host the European Leadership Panel: Values and more. On the future of Public Service Media in Europe.
With Ruurd Bierman (NPO), Dagmar Reim (rbb), Ingrid Deltenre (EBU), Rémy Pflimlin (France Télévisions), Roger de Weck (SRG-SSR), Lauri Kivinen (YLE), Thomas Bellut (ZDF) and László Zsolt Szabó (MTVU). Moderated by Arne Wessberg former CEO YLE.
The discussion will be followed by PRIX EUROPA’S 25th birthday party.

On Friday, 28 October, the Nordic Embassies (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), will see the finale of our trip through Europe, which will by then have lead us from the very South to the very North of our continent. The strong ties of the Nordic countries to the festival throughout its history will be celebrated: Screenings of winning entries from the past, discussions with film makers, online presentations, video projects – all five Nordic countries will be represented at this final stage of our Tour d’Europe within Berlin.
