TV FICTION
Pier Wilkie
"I have been a producer at the BBC for the past eight years, making a range of drama (most recently winning a BAFTA for serial 'Criminal Justice'). I first came to PRIX EUROPA in 2004 and had a wonderful time meeting programme makers from across Europe. I was lucky enough to collect the PRIX EUROPA Television fiction prize for single drama 'When I'm Sixty-four' in 2005."
Mark De Geest
"Good stories help people to cope with life. They let us think about our values, help us to understand our feelings, and give meaning to our activities. At the Prix Europa it will be our job to look for the best possible stories for this fast developing, ever changing 21th century."
TV DOCUMENTARY
Paul Watson
"As a documentary filmmaker one has always known of the PRIX EUROPA. It is an awesome title! And on occasion when working in the cutting room on a difficult but innovative scene, the challenge of PRIX EUROPA, drifts past one’s eyes. No we do not make films to win awards, at least I don't, but when it happens and it did for me and my film, 'Rain in my Heart', prickles of pride race up the spine. A hard working international group of filmmakers have viewed, argued, praised and challenged our films. Their skills are utilised in order to determine the worth of our work. No favour is shown to the great, names don't count but content does. The message matters. The making matters. And those considerations are made by a jury who respect, even love Documentary film.
This year I have been asked to work with that jury. It is a task I very much appreciate being asked to do. A task, when at week’s end and our labours are exhausted we will be able to hold aloft a film that has moved us, united our various passions and prejudice into declaring a winner.
A celebration! A film of content! A film good enough to deserve the PRIX EUROPA."
Volodymyr Ariev
"PRIX EUROPA with it atmosphere of mixture cooperation and competition is my lovely media festival. I'm going to take part in it at fifth time. It is a honor to coordinate discussion between best filmmakers of Europe, but first of all it is a chance to get a great creative experience from all who will take part in TV Doc competition. Looking forward to see all of them in Berlin!"
TV CURRENT AFFAIRS
Katrin Sandmann
"As a reporter for a 24h news program I am obviously a dedicated "news-gatherer". I spent a couple of years in early 2000 as mid-east-correspondent. After leaving the region I returned to headquarters in Berlin. Ever since I mostly cover breaking news stories. My job takes me all around the world and gives me the opportunity to see, listen and learn where of I can't seem to get enough. This is why I am looking very much forward to becoming a coordinator on the jury group for the current affaires category of PRIX EUROPA 2009. Equally I am looking forward to watching a lot of interesting features and subsequently discussing them with a dedicated group of journalist."
Tomas Dillén
"It is the delegates, the programme makers themselves-discussing,
observing, voting that make PRIX EUROPA a unique event in the world of an
endless number of festivals and contests"
TV IRIS
Daniela Drastata
"Diversity is a challenging topic for many programme makers, and attending PPRIX EUROPA, its PRIX IRIS category, is an opportunity to get a perfect insight into the best that Europe has to offer in this respect. I find that the PRIX IRIS offers the most attractive three days of Berlin’s week; not only do you get a colourful picture of Europe, but also a diversity of formats to boot.
When you start thinking I won’t survive another one and a half hour documentary about human rights abuses, you switch to a fiction film or a crime series, and then you're back to dynamic Current Affairs programmes.
The PRIX IRIS surprises me, entertains me, makes me happy and emotional… It’s a tasteful mish-mash that will quell your hunger for brilliant multicultural television and film. It’s fun!"
Heenan Bhatti
"The whole notion of race is incredibly important to the culture of Europe. For me it’s a barometer of certain sensibilities, including tolerance and inclusion. Having a European prize that recognizes that is crucial, reflecting how we, as Europeans, from whatever background, engage with and attempt to understand each other."
Languages through Lenses
Mårten Andersson
"Believe it or not - I will be a part of Prix Europa for the 11th time! Every year since 1999 I have gone to Berlin in October. I have come in different shapes: as coordinator or observer. As an old Swedish producer, film-maker and small boss at SVT I think that my regular visits to this great event (films and people) give me an interesting and miscellaneous picture of what is going on in our part of the world."
Anna Daucikova
"I am a visual artist and videomaker involved in higher art education for the last 10 years. My focus is the research in videoart and multimedia together with teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design Bratislava. Being involved in the selection process for the competition Languages Through Lenses, on Multilingualism, I realised that for young film- and videomakers the possibility to compete on a European level is an outstanding inspiration and great motivation. I am looking forward to see the finished projects at the PRIX EUROPA screening in Berlin and discuss the smart ideas with the students, teachers and audience."
RADIO FICTION
Alison Hindell
"As Head of Radio Drama for the BBC, I am delighted to be returning to the PRIX EUROPA Radio Fiction group this year and look forward very much to meeting up with colleagues from previous visits and to meeting new ones. It is a hugely inspirational competition and full of such interesting ideas and people."
Marina Bagdasaryan
"My dear colleagues! I'm happy to be together...
I appreciate your proffesionalism, your sense of humor, your brilliant discussions!
The possibility to feel this unique atmosphere, to live these fantastic days in Berlin, to exchange ideas, to share love to Radio Drama is really great!"
RADIO DOCUMENTARY
Lisbeth Jessen
"I work with young radio feature makers from all over Europe for the EBU Master School making lectures and being their coach. It is a job that I am extremely happy about, because the Master School is a place, where you meet new talents, young people with a lot of energy wanting to improve their skills. At the PRIX EUROPA I get the opportunity to hear the best features in Europe and not to forget the discussions about them. So I am happy to be invited as radio jury coordinator for the PRIX EUROPA 2009."
Silvia Lahner
"I have made radio my life’s career since a professional accident way back in 1981 introduced me to this fascinating universe.
In a divided world radio waves, accoustic experiments carrying the sound of cultures across borders of states and language are perhaps the most powerful messages we can deliver.
PRIX EUROPA in its various categories creates a bond uniting people and artists or writers expressing themselves by radio aiming , despite different cultural identities, at the same objective: Opening hearts and minds towards the Other and thus give a voice to cultural diversity."
EMERGING MEDIA
Sabine Schade
"ARD.de is the website of the ARD, one of Germany's public broadcasters. I am looking forward to PRIX EUROPA very much again this year, as the projects that are entered always gives a wonderful insight into what's happening on the Internet at the moment. The special thing is the inspiring professional exchange with the multimedia experts, authors, project managers and colleagues."
Kristian Stokholm
"I and my staff work with a variety of interactive products - mostly websites related to our TV broadcasts and DR's children's web presence. I participated in PRIX EUROPA Internet for the first time in 2003 and found the most relevant venue for public broadcasters to share experiences with new media. I have kept returning here for a yearly dose of inspiration ever since, and now I have sort of become part of the furniture..."
