Onomatopoeia means the use of words that imitate the sound of what they refer to. Onomatopoeia is an inconspicuous, but nonetheless indispensable part of the language and varies from one language to another. It is intuitive and is the first human reaction to our own environment.
Children’s language and onomatopoeia have a lot in common; for example, they are based on imitation. Children imitate adults and their environment – onomatopoeia imitates noise and tones in nature. Both are intuitive and constitute a very direct way of communicating.
For the video recording of Voice print, speakers of twenty-three languages from different EU-countries were invited. Scores of symbols and icons were prepared for the performers so that they would know which sounds to imitate. The video shooting took place in a park in Vienna, where the performers were grouped to form a choir. They imitated the sounds, based on the symbols displayed, simultaneously in solo, trio, and male and female chorus.
